The Evolution of Encryption

IBM submits a proposal to develop a secure standard for businesses like banks to communicate electronically. The Standard, called the Data Encryption Standard (DES) uses what was even then considered a weak form of 56 bit encryption. Despite being broken on numerous occassions it is still widely used today.
